Light a Flame in the Stillness.
Lower the lights. Kindle a single flame. In the darkness, a warm orange glow quietly emerges. The flame sways slowly and deeply, like a breath. You simply rest your gaze upon its movement. Stepping away from the noise of everyday life, you return to your own inner rhythm. A light created to savor the quiet margins of the night.

Design
A pure flame, gently alive.
This Japanese candle is crafted solely from the gifts of nature.
The wax is 100% plant-based, extracted from the fruit of the haze tree. The wick is made from washi paper and the pith of “igusa” rush grass. Because the wick is hollow, air flows softly through its center, creating a flame that sways broadly and gracefully—alive, yet calm. Layer upon layer, the pure plant wax is applied by hand, resulting in a smooth, supple texture that only handcraft can achieve. Its dignified presence brings a refined sense of stillness and space to any room.

Story
Time, quietly layered.
To shape a single candle, the refined sensibilities of skilled artisans are essential. Molten haze wax is applied by bare hand, again and again, onto a wick formed from washi paper and igusa grass. At first, the candle appears softly white, tinged with pale yellow. As it matures over time, its color gradually deepens into a calm, gentle gray. This traditional method—far removed from simply pouring wax into a mold—creates an expression that can only be born from time, touch, and patience. Each candle carries a quietly unique presence.

Culture
Keeping spaces pure.
For centuries, the light of Japanese candles has been closely tied to prayer and spiritual practice. Candles made from haze wax produce very little soot and release a faint, natural aroma as
the wax slowly melts. Even without strong detergents, soot can be brushed away with ease. The traditional year-end temple ritual known as susuharai cleanses spaces not by washing, but by gently sweeping away residue. This pure, plant-based light has helped protect wooden temple architecture and precious cultural treasures across hundreds of years. Not allowing impurity to accumulate. Keeping daily life clean and clear. This quiet, uncompromising aesthetic lives within this flame.

Sustainability
Circulating toward a thousand years ahead.
Born from the fruit of the haze tree, this light places no burden on the environment. After the wax is extracted, the remaining pulp is returned to the soil as natural fertilizer, completing a gentle cycle. To protect high-quality haze trees, now increasingly rare, a cultivation project is underway in the mountains of Kyoto.
Rather than simply consuming resources, we grow forests ourselves—passing this light on toward a future a thousand years from now. This is NEZEN’s approach to truly circular craftsmanship.

Ritual / NEZEN LIFE
Surrender to the quiet margins of the night.
At the end of a busy day, dim the lights and gently kindle the flame. Air flowing through the hollow wick creates a soft, living sway— a moment where you do nothing more than rest your eyes upon its movement. The candle burns for approximately 20 minutes before quietly extinguishing itself— just the right length of time to release the tension of the day. As the flame naturally fades away, your awareness softens, gently guiding you toward a
deep and peaceful night’s rest.
