ORIN

ORIN-FUTON

Supporting its clear resonance

Reimagined from the traditional mat placed beneath a ORIN, this cushion takes on a simple form that settles naturally into everyday living. Made from plant-based materials—hinoki wood powder, linen, and the soft linters surrounding cotton seeds—each element draws on nature’s gifts. A cushion made for ORIN, designed to support its clear, resonant sound.

Design

A pared-down form that brings the rin bell into focus

A simple, square shape reduced to its essentials. Finished in calm black vegan leather with fine stitching, it is crafted to lie flat and
unobtrusive. Unlike traditional, raised cushions, this minimalist design harmonizes with contemporary interiors. While firmly receiving ORIN’s clear tone, it remains modest in presence, never calling attention to itself.

Story

A small, honest piece made in a bedding workshop

Carefully sewn in a factory in Shiga Prefecture, this cushion is made as a foundation for sound. From straight, undistorted lines to the smallest details of the stitching, the quiet precision of
skilled hands is present throughout. Stitch by stitch, it is sewn slowly, with close attention. When ORIN is placed upon it, the cushion offers a gentle, reassuring stability. A product that quietly stays with its user in everyday life.

Culture

Laying down a cushion, with a calm mind

The word FUTON appears in writings by Zen monks as early as the 13th century. It originally referred to a round seat woven from cattail leaves, used during seated meditation. Over centuries, the form gradually changed, eventually becoming bedding item. In Japan, it has long been customary to avoid placing valued objects directly on tables or stands. By placing a mat or cushion beneath them, one expresses respect for the object itself. Laying down a small cushion and gently placing ORIN upon it— this simple act helps bring the mind into balance.

Sustainability

Entrusting nature’s gifts, and carrying them forward

The surface material is vegan leather, free from animal-derived components. Plant-based polyurethane (BIO PU) is blended with upcycled hinoki wood powder, sourced from woodworking byproducts. The filling combines natural linen with soft cotton linters— the fine fibers that surround cotton seeds after oil extraction. Materials that might otherwise have fulfilled their role are given a new place. By making use of nature’s gifts, this piece connects them gently to the next cycle.

Ritual / NEZEN LIFE

Where resonance is born

Take this small FUTON in your hands and lay it down, quietly.
Place ORINl upon it, with both hands. This simple gesture calms the mind and softens the body. The sound of ORIN spreads slowly, and stillness begins to fill the space. This cushion is there to support that clear, resonant sound
