SAMUE

A Garment for Quiet Time

Wearing stillness. The body and mind begin to soften. Rooted in the traditional form of samue, this piece brings together a light, comfortable feel suited to contemporary life. Quietly restoring rhythm to everyday time. This is NEZEN’s SAMUE.

Design

A composed presence with an unrestrictive fit.

The jacket incorporates the traditional silhouette of samue. A button at the chest helps keep the front neatly in place. The pants are an original NEZEN design. Created with ease of sitting in mind, the pattern was refined through repeated fittings. Standing, sitting, lying down—the garment allows each movement to flow naturally. The waist ties at the front, with elastic only at the back. It is designed to follow the body gently while minimizing tightness. Soft elastic at the hems balances ease of movement with a clean silhouette. When worn as a set, the design creates a quiet, composed presence.

Story

A garment that gently restores the rhythm of body and mind.

Traditional samue has often been made with firm fabrics, valued for durability as workwear. For NEZEN’s SAMUE, we began by reconsidering the fabric, with comfort in everyday time as our starting point. We chose 100% cotton seersucker. Light and airy, the fabric has a naturally textured surface created by differences in yarn shrinkage. This texture keeps the cloth away from the skin and allows air to pass through, making it comfortable even in warm, humid seasons. To preserve the character of the material, each piece is carefully made at a sewing factory in Japan. The light fabric is sewn with a soft finish, offering gentle comfort from the moment you slip it on. For times of work and rest alike, it offers ease and comfort.

Culture

Turning everyday movement into a quiet practice.

Samue is a garment traditionally worn by monks in their daily duties—cleaning, cooking, tending the garden, and caring for their surroundings. These acts were not merely tasks. Through daily action, they became a way to bring order to the body and mind. With minimal decoration, freedom of movement, and a form that follows the body naturally, samue carries within it a Japanese culture of refining action with beauty and care. NEZEN’s SAMUE carries this spirit forward, shaping it for contemporary life.

Sustainability

Using every piece of material and giving it a place in daily life.

The design is kept simple so that the garment can be worn for years to come. The 100% cotton seersucker is light, breathable, and becomes more comfortable against the skin with each wash. It is especially suited to warmer seasons. Using fabric remnants from the production process, we also made a Shingen bag. Rather than discarding leftover material, we give it new purpose as a tool for daily life. The Shingen bag can hold an  orin bell, orin cushion, and striker.

Ritual / NEZEN LIFE

A garment for spending time in comfort and calm.

Private time should allow the body and mind to loosen, and the pace of the day to slow. For moments of rest, moments of ease, and moments of quiet return, we created this SAMUE. As you slip it on, the body softens, the mind begins to unwind, and you return to your own rhythm. NEZEN’s SAMUE is a garment for gently bringing everyday time into balance. Place your tools in the Shingen bag and take them outdoors. It can also accompany quiet moments of meditation in a favorite place.
