KOH

A Pure Fragrance Rising in Silence

A delicate Japanese sensibility that speaks of listening to scent. We present two fragrances born from “sōkon mokuhī”—natural materials drawn from grasses, roots, wood, and bark. Gentle aromas and a single, quietly rising thread of smoke form a subtle presence.
Slowly spreading, it brings a sense of generous space into everyday life.

Design

A Quiet Time Woven by Scent and Smoke

What we designed are two fragrances. Softly sweet and full-bodied sandalwood. And aloeswood, with a deep, lingering resonance. Sandalwood carries the calm hue of small branches.
Aloeswood holds the rich tone of rain-soaked earth. Differences that emerge only from natural materials. When lit, the faint sway of a single line of smoke also becomes part of the design—gently settling the mind. As it wavers and shifts, the smoke draws a form that will never appear again. To remain free of visual noise in any setting, we removed ornamentation and housed the incense in a simple white paper box.

Story

Grinding, Blending, and Giving Form to Fragrance

Fragrant woods and bark are carefully ground into powder. Water is added and kneaded until the mixture becomes uniform.
The paste is then shaped into slender sticks and left to dry slowly.
The process appears simple, yet it is deeply intricate. Each step demands the skill and experience of artisans, with the blending ratio kept strictly confidential. Crafted in a workshop that has worked with incense materials since the late Edo period, this fragrance is composed solely of natural ingredients. It draws out the true character of the aromatic woods, embodying the quiet pursuit of the craftsman.

Culture

Cleansing Space and Listening to Scent — A Japanese Sensibility

Since ancient times, fragrance has been used as a means to calm the mind and step away from daily life. Just as one listens closely to sound, the rising scent is received in silence. Through it, one attunes to the subtle presence of nature hidden within trees nurtured by the earth, gently releasing awareness. Incense also serves as a measure of time. Lighting a single stick and sitting quietly— Zazen. Time is let go within a faint fragrance, and when the smoke fades and the scent softens, the sitting comes to an end. This unbroken lineage of Japanese olfactory sensibility is quietly woven into the nights of the present day.

Sustainability

Embracing Nature’s Gifts Without Waste, Purposefully

Made solely from plant-based natural resources. The materials include natural incense ingredients, charcoal powder, and the bark of the tabunoki tree. No artificial fragrances or binding agents are used. No dyes are added—the color is the material’s own. To allow adjustment according to one’s mood or time, the incense can be gently broken before use. A small sheet indicating approximate burn times is included in the box. Natural fragrance, gently and without strain, as part of everyday life.

Ritual / NEZEN LIFE

Creating a Comfortable Margin Through Natural Fragrance

When you wish to clear the space, burn incense. When you wish to calm your mind, light the flame. Guided by the softly wavering form of smoke and the gentle, serene scent, the space moves beyond the time of today and gradually shifts into stillness. As the clear tone of ORIN joins in, the contours of time soften even further, and a rich moment of margin quietly unfolds.
